Missing the Mark

This morning as I was trying to wake up before heading off to work - Mondays are always so hard - I saw an interesting interview on the Today show.
Sidenote: For some reason, Chris and I have started to watch the Today show every morning. Sometimes I really don't know why I like it - most of it seems so shallow and for every 5 minute segment they have there are 10 minutes worth of commercials.
Anyways, today was an interesting interview. Apparently, this guy who has a young daughter (kids inspire so much) decided to go on a spiritual quest for a year and follow ALL the rules of the Bible. So he dressed in Bible garb which I don't think was necessarily helpful and set out to keep all of the Ten Commandments. And what do you suppose he discovered? That he couldn't keep them all. He said he lied and coveted more than he ever thought he did. But as he was talking to Matt and joking about everything he did such as not wearing clothes made of blended fabrics, I thought of how much he was missing the mark.
He went on this so-called quest of spirituality in order to somehow discover what to teach his child and missed the mark. What would the Bible be without the New Testament? Of course we cannot follow all of the rules. There are to many and they are impossible to keep every day of our lives. And that is exactly the way it is supposed to be. The rules and commandments are meant to point us to Jesus. This is not only what I hoped this guy would have but something we all need to discover eventually in our lifetimes. We need Jesus as a Savior and the one who died for all our sins - sins that we commit because we continually fall short of what has been laid out for us in life. That is the most important lesson he will ever need to teach his child. I just hope he comes to that realization himself.

Wow, sounds like a good interview. Too bad it couldn't have been more serious about what he was actually discovering. Might be more under the surface that he didn't want to bring out on TV.
