SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not seen the latest episode of LOST. You can probably skip this post too if you do not watch LOST or do not care! Haha!
I usually do not post about this show because I don't know how many of my blogger friends actually watch and are interested in hearing about it.
However, Tuesday's episode was probably the best of the season so far, in my opinion. Since I started watching LOST in season 3 (and then later backtracked to seasons 1 &2 ) I have greatly disliked Ben Linus. He's manipulative, deceptive, a real jerk sometimes, and just plain creepy.
I did feel sorry for his childhood experience as he was greatly resented by his father for the fact his mother died during childbirth. So his birthday was not the happiest of occasions growing up. But last night it was so good to see some form of redemption happening for him. Especially after the position he's fallen from.
On the island, Ben was shown as the leader of the Others, appointed by Jacob, to lead them in the way they should go. But when the Losties showed up and challenged his people that all changed. Ben was willing to go to great lengths to preserve himself without much though for people around him. It even caused the death of his daughter Alex which devastated him more then he realized at the time.
It was ironic that in the flash sideways he ends up being a history teacher telling his class about Napoleon being exiled to the island and being stripped of his power. Exactly what happened to Ben on the island time-line.
Although we still see that he does have some selfish tendencies in the off-island time-line. He was willing to blackmail his principal just to gain the respect he deserved but in the end showed great character by taking the high road and looking out for someone other then himself. A great moment if you ask me.
Another great moment on the island was when he chose NOT to follow Flocke, who helped him escape from digging his own grave and offered to put him back in charge of the island. Instead he explains himself ti Iliana and decides to stick with the people on the beach. I hope this proves to be a good decision for him - well unless Charles Widmore finds him!
All in all, a great episode and we actually got a few questions answered. It was also interesting to note that Ben mentions being on the island during the flash-sideways. He was actually a part of the DHARMA initiative with his father but they left at some point and now have a better relationship. So maybe this isn't the epilogue we thought it was? Who knows! Cant' wait until next week.
