Geocaching

A few weeks ago Chris went to a going out of business sale at Joe's, a sporting goods store. He scored a great deal on a hand held GPS unit that had been a display model. After a few unsuccessful attempts he got it to work and so we have been thinking about geocaching.

Some of our friends really love it and we wanted to give it a try. We went to a movie on Sunday and took our GPS unit with us to try out some caching afterward. Our first try didn't work so well because it seemed the person had hid the cache in the middle of tumbleweeds and sand. And we didn't have the clue.

So we moved on to the next one and success! It was hidden about eye level in a tree at the edge of a park near out house. I know Chris was really excited to find it. We wanted to find more but again - they were out in the sagebrush and sand and I was wearing sandals and did not enjoy getting cheat grass in between my toes. Next time I will be better prepared. Hopefully we can make this a regular activity! Here's a picture of our first find:

So what did you actually find? I couldn't tell from the picture. You should bring it when you come to visit; we might find some fun sites.

This cache was just an old peanut butter jar wrapped in camo tape and the person had attached a wire to put it in the tree with. Some caches are just little magnetic capsules with scrolls in them. They vary.

That would be fun to geocache in Minnesota.
